Laboratory Beagle Adoption Division

Available Beagles

If you are interested in adopting one of our Beagles, please read our adoption guidelines page, and then complete our online adoption form.

PLEASE NOTE: Many of our beagles have special needs - either medical or behavioral, and may not be appropriate for active homes with young children.  If you have a quieter home, a fenced in yard and another dog, we will likely have a match in the rescue, or can find an appropriate dog for you much sooner than for other applicants. Most applicants are looking for young females, and if so, you may be placed on a waiting list if you are not willing to consider a male since we always have more males in the rescue than females.

All of our Beagles are spayed/neutered, up to date on their vaccinations, heartworm negative and on preventative, microchipped, and on flea/tick preventative. They are all fostered in private homes throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Click on each dog's picture to see his/her description. Pink denotes female, blue denotes male, and teal denotes laboratory retirees.

CAMERON

young (~ 3 years), Beagle/Miniature Pinscher (?) mix, spayed female

Cameron is a high energy young beagle who found her way to our rescue through a veterinarian's office in Northern New Jersey.  Cameron completed an evaluation at the University of Pennsylvania Behavior Clinic and does best when on some medication to decrease her anxieties. She is generally crate and housetrained, but will have an occasional accident due to her anxiety.  She loves to play with other dogs, and will play fetch with someone for as long as they are willing to play.  Cameron's ideal home is with a committed, child-free adopter - preferably with some beagle or dog training experience! Please ask about Cameron so we can find her the loving home she deserves!

GEOFFREY

young (~3 year), neutered male

Hi!  My name is Geoffrey!  I've had an interesting road in my short walk of life...

I was bred for research, and arrived at my laboratory when I was 1 year old.  Baseline blood and urine tests showed that something was a little "off" with my kidneys.  The lab kept me for a whole year - never using me in any studies - and after my last round of blood and urine tests about a year later decided that I just could not be used in any studies, and needed to leave the laboratory.  They were kind enough to ask CBR-East if they could take me to help diagnose my condition and find me a forever home.  So here I am!

Update: Geoffrey had an ultrasound which indicated that there are no structural abnormalities to account for his kidney issues.  In some ways that is good, but in others, means that there is something wrong with the way Geoffrey's kidneys are functioning that we cannot really fix.

What Geoffrey has is called glomerulonephritis (GN). It is insufficiency of his kidney function, and causes him to lose protein (proteinuria) through his urine. There are dogs that can live many years with "GN" with just basic support, but adopters must understand that Geoffrey will need continued monitoring and treatment. He is currently taking ACE inhibitors (Enalapril), and takes EFA caps and Colostrum caps as his supplements.  He is on an all natural food, and has yogurt with his breakfast.  He is thriving with this combination and this should continue until a vet recommends a change. His kidney levels will need to be checked every 3 months.

Geoffrey is ADORABLE, and just loves to cuddle.  He is afraid of just about everything - including his own shadow and reflection in a mirror!  He is coming along nicely, though, and loves to play with other beagles.  If Geoffrey had been brought into a home when he was a puppy, you would have no idea that there is anything wrong with his kidneys.  He has no clinical symptoms.  It was really own caught because of the testing done in the laboratory which most veterinarians would not normally begin to do for a housepet until about 5-6 years of age! He is working on his housetraining and cratetraining, and would do best in a calm, quiet home with a fenced in yard, another friendly beagle to play with, and someone home a good part of the day. Geoffrey's fears would make him inappropriate in a home with children under the age of 15.  He is not aggressive by any means!  He is just afraid of a lot...

SAVANNAH

young (~ 1.5 year), spayed female

My name is Savannah! I was retired from a biomedical research experiment which left me with just 1 kidney!  Hey - I got to help some people with kidney transplant research, and now I get to find a forever home. :) How awesome is that?!

I am loving exploring this fascinating world outside the laboratory.  If I can tell you one thing, it is that I LOVE toys!  Balls are really cool, and I love to chew on nylabones. Once I get to know you, I am crazy!  I give kisses all the time, and I love to play with other dogs.  The problem is that when I first meet, I will run away.  I will need very patient adopters to understand this, and still be willing to adopt me and work with me.  I tend to "bolt" whenever I hear a sound, so a fenced in yard would be great for me so that if I bolt, I am still contained!

"T" - ADOPTED!

young  (~2.5 years), neutered male

What's in a name?  Really?  I mean, when the laboratory told me that they would be releasing a dog to us named "TrainWreck" I thought "Well, we definitely will need to change that...

and in the first 5 minutes of meeting "T" you understand how appropriate the name is, so we're keeping it!  "T" was voluntarily released to us from a research facility.  The veins in his neck are difficult to draw blood from, so he did not make a good candidate for studies.  SO, "T" was released to CBR to find him a great home!  In the short time T has been here, it is clear that he is not a typical shy, cautious, or even fearful retiree.  Um, no.  T decided to jump onto my file cabinet the first night home, decided to slide down a flight of steps since he was too interested in what was down there, and likes to put his head right in the refrigerator to check out what is in there.  I don't know if I have ever had a dog make me laugh more!

Update: T is such a great dog that any family would be lucky to have!  He is a bit anxious in new environments, and just tends to be very active, but he does settle down once he gets comfortable.  When you pick him up, he snuggles into you like a little stuffed animal and will stay there as long as you let him. :) T will need a patient adopter to continue to work on his housetraining and cratetraining. T seems to love everyone (other dogs, kids) and everything he meets.  He would greatly benefit from an obedience class.  He is taking in the "real world" with an amazing zest for life! He is so much fun and needs to go to a family with a good sense of humor!

WALKER

adult  (~4 years), neutered male

Walker just arrived to CBR-East. :) He is an adorable little beagle who was used in biomedical research studies.  There are no anticipated short or long term effects expected from his "time of service."  Now, we just need to find him a loving home!

Update: Walker has had quite an adventure here at CBR-East.  After being with us for less than a week, Walker accidentally got out of his foster home and was lost in the woods and on the busy streets of Princeton, NJ for 8 long days.  With the help of our amazing volunteers, the Princeton community, the Animal Control Officer, and about $1,500 in supplies and reward money, Walker was trapped in a humane trap on the 8th day and came back to CBR-East.  He is settling in nicely in a new foster home, but has some weight to gain, and needs to work on his housetraining.  Walker is quite terrified now when he goes outside, and really wants nothing to do with the outdoors at this point in time.  We think Walker would do best as an only dog in a home since he is challenging the  more dominant dogs in his foster home.  We see the potential for Walker to have some separation anxiety, so someone who is home, or who can give him a lot of attention and training would be the best fit for him. We think an active home with young children will be too overwhelming for Walker.  He is a great little beagle who experienced an 8 day adventure long before he was ready to do so, and now needs to find some security and stability in a wonderful and loving adoptive home.

Update:  Walker is doing fabulously!  He is very much a "boy" - loves to wrestle with other dogs (although we still think he would do best as an only dog, but with playdates!), loves to chew on nylabones, is quite muscular and just looks like a handsome boy.  He enjoys being outside again, and has reacted well to new people he has met.  He is cratetrained and housetrained to a schedule.  He still loves his dogbed and would make a great companion for the right adopter!  He is initially cautious with new people and new environments, but with patience and time, will do great!

WESLEY-ADOPTED!

young (~ 1.5 year), neutered male

Wesley is in his foster home and doing great! He is an adorable little beagle who was used in biomedical research studies.  There are no anticipated short or long term effects expected from hjs "time of service."

Wesley is a higher energy young beagle who is taking in the world!  He is very sweet, and will need time to adjust anywhere since he does seem to get a bit anxious in new environments.  Wesley is cratetrained, and working on his housetraining.  Wesley does NOT like to be crated, so a home where someone is home during the day, or where he would not need to be crated would be best for him.  He'll need some help with obedience skills, so a loving, patient adopter will be best for him!

LIBBY - ADOPTED!

adult (~ 3 years), spayed female

Libby is beginning her retirement at CBR-East.  She was used in biomedical research studies for drug dosing studies, and then as  a "training dog" on whom staff were able to learn and practice new techniques (for example, drawing blood).

Libby is a very sweet little beagle.  She is still learning about the world and often becomes overwhelmed with new experiences.  An active home with young children will NOT be a match for Libby. She will need a quiet home with a loving and patient adopters who will be willing to work on her housetraining. Once we learn more, we will post it about Libby!

TIVIE

adult (~ 5 years), neutered male

Tivie has arrived at CBR-East!  He was placed in a foster home earlier than we had anticipated, but he was not handling being boarded very well.  Tivie is a social little beagle who needs to be around people.

Tivie was used for non-toxic drug dosing studies, and then for the past 3 years, was used as a "training dog" (on whom staff were able to learn and practice new techniques such as drawing blood).  There are no short or long term side effects expected from his time of service at the lab.

Tivie's foster home is in love with him.  What a sweet boy...gentle, cautious, and just looking for love.  He is a fairly mellow boy right now, but we're still waiting to see how his personality develops.  Tivie is cratetrained, but is working on his housetraining.  He gets along with his beagle foster brothers and sisters, and seems to love attention from people.  He is cautious at first, but calms and is curious, so that works in his favor.  He loves to snuggle and would make a wonderful addition to the right home. A real active home will definitely be too much for Tivie, as would a home with very young children. He will need patient adopters willing to introduce him to all the things the world has to offer.  He is still learning how to go up and down stairs, and after a week in foster care has learned how to go down, but still needs to learn how to come up!

Thanks to Best Friends Pet Care for boarding Tivie for us!

ROSCOE - ADOPTION PENDING!

young (~ 1.5 year), neutered male

Ruff...I'm Roscoe! I am a super sweet, super cuddly little beagle!  I was bred for research and lived in a laboratory for most of my life, but now I am "retired" and ready to enjoy life as a real beagle!

Well, the reports from my foster family say that I am just an awesome beagle. :) I love to play with other dogs, and really feel most comfortable when there is another dog around, so I need one in my forever home, please! I like new people, but very small children will probably be too much for me.  I tolerate the cats in my foster home, so those should not be a problem for me!  I am cratetrained and working on my housetraining.  I am still working on how to go up and down stairs, and would prefer to have a fenced in yard to do my business since my leash walking skills will need some work. I am a relatively quiet beagle, and even pretty mellow for a beagle my age, but I am a real charmer and will love to get lots of attention from you!  ROSCOE IS BEING FOSTERED IN CONNECTICUT!!

PEACHES

adult (~ 4-5 years), spayed female

What's fuzzy, sweet and just delicious?  PEACHES!! This little girl is ripe for the picking...she's got a super personality and gets along wonderfully with dogs, kids and she's pretty low key to boot.

Peaches is up to date on vaccines, spayed, great with housetraining, crate trained and waiting for her forever home. We're hoping for a very happy ending for this 4 year old girl who came to us from an out of state shelter where she had a nasty case of tapeworm - yuck.  The good news (other than we were lucky enough to save her in time!) is that she's "squiggle free" and on
heartworm preventative, flea preventative and she's had her first foster bath without a
hitch.

We often get requests for dogs that have great potty skills and Peaches has a clue for
certain. If you are looking for a low-medium great dog who will be a quiet companion for you
please don't wait - like her namesake, Peaches won't be here for another season.

MOJITO-ADOPTED!

young (~ 1.5 year), neutered male

I'm Mojito! I just arrived at CBR-East after being bred for and participating in biomedical research.  Now it's time for me to enjoy my retirement!  I am looking forward to learning about life outside of a laboratory, and so far, I am taking it all in stride!

I am a nice balance of high energy playfulness and mischievousness, and then calming down for some major cuddle time. :)  I enjoy playing with other dogs, and will really need a fenced in yard to give me an outlet for some of my energy.  Beagle-experienced owners are preferred.  I am cratetrained and working on my housetraining.  I think I will need some patient adopters who will have a good sense of humor - enough to keep me in line, and enough to have fun with me, too!

COOPER

young (~ 1.5 year), neutered male

I'm Cooper! I just arrived at CBR-East after being bred for and participating in biomedical research.  Now it's time for me to enjoy my retirement!  I am looking forward to learning about life outside of a laboratory, and I think it is pretty cool so far!

I am a slightly taller beagle, but still a little clumsy and awkward like young pups.  I am a little needy, but just love everyone...the problem, if you want it call it that, is that I want to be ON you all the time!  I love to snuggle and cuddle.  I like to play with other dogs, and have a DEEP bark that does not sound like it should come out of me!  I am cratetrained and working on my housetraining.  I am still learning about life in a house and everything that comes with it, so a patient adopter willing to understand this would be best for me!

NELLIE - ADOPTED!

adult (~ 4 years), spayed female

Whoooooa! Meet Nellie.
She is our latest addition to the shelter pups we've pulled.

Nellie is a 4 year old quiet, friendly girl who is a standard sized beagle. She's great with other dogs and enjoys the resident cat in her foster home. Nellie is up to date on her vaccinations, spayed and ready to meet a new family to love her furr-ever. Nellie's foster mom reports that she is a very nice dog who does well in the car, and she got great reviews from our vets.

Nellie is spayed and would be fine as an only dog (but thats not at all necessary). Nellie loves walks on lead and she does very well with housetraining. She is also crate
trained and she is one of the nicest girls we've met and brought into rescue. If you're interested in adopting her or a dog like Nellie please fill out an online adoption application.

KAY

adult (5 years), spayed female

Kay is doing great in foster care!  She is a relatively mellow girl who loves to curl up on the couch.  She also enjoys playing with her canine foster siblings! Kay gets a bit nervous when she is outside of her comfort zone, so we are looking for patient adopters who will understand and work with her on this.  She is cratetrained and housetrained to a schedule, and seems to love almost everyone she meets.   She'll make a wonderful pet for the right adopter, preferably one with other beagle for her to play with, and a fenced in yard!

HAPPY- COURTESY POSTING

adult (~6 years), male

PLEASE NOTE THAT HAPPY IS NOT WITH CBR-EAST, BUT IS WITH HIS OWNER IN EDGEWATER, NJ.  HE IS SIMPLY BEING LISTED AS A COURTESY.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HAPPY, PLEASE CALL IVETTE at: 201-543-4226.

We have a 6 year old male beagle, Happy, that we cannot keep. We have been looking for a home for him privately for quite some time and have not had any luck. He is up to date on all his shots and is a friendly, fun loving dog. He is great with kids and simply needs an owner that can give him the attention he deserves. Our circumstances have changed significantly and we are unable to continue caring for him. Please help! He is not fixed and suffers from seasonal allergies which we
treat. I am attaching a recent photo and hope that you will be able to help us place him in a loving home. We are located in Edgewater, NJ. You can reach me by phone at 201-543-4223. Thanks very much in advance.

If interested in learning more about Happy, email his owner here.

OLIVER- COURTESY POSTING

young (~3-4 years), neutered male

PLEASE NOTE THAT OLIVER IS NOT WITH CBR-EAST, BUT IS WITH ANOTHER RESCUE IN CENTRAL NEW JERSEY. HE IS SIMPLY BEING LISTED AS A COURTESY.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OLIVER, PLEASE CONTACT JACKIE at BAMA'S NATURAL INSTINCT BY CLICKING HERE.

ONLY NJ APPLICANTS WILL BE CONSIDERED, AND NONE WITH AN INVISIBLE FENCE.

Oliver is about 3-4 years old, neutered, up to date on all shots, good with other animals. He has some hind leg weakness. The vet thinks this is from a previous back/disc injury. His hind leg weakness does not keep him from walking around, or going to the bathroom. He is a little wobbly on the hind end -- no iron beagle competitions for him ;0) -- but he gets around just fine. He can chase a ball, but does get tired after a bit and then sits down. Overall he is a very happy boy.

A report from his foster home includes: "He is pretty active -- for a boy with sort of wobbly hind legs -- and has been getting around the house just fine. He walks well on a leash and loves the park. He gets along fine with other dogs and loves kids and sunning himself in the yard (so a fenced-in-yard is a must.)

With that said, I think a home where he has to go up multiple levels throughout the day is not going to work. While he can do stairs, he is somewhat unsteady going up and down them and I could see him taking a spill if left unsupervised. (We kind of "spot" him on the stairs and, when going out, make sure baby gates are up on all stairways.) Also, after doing the stairs a few times-a-day to go in and out to the bathroom, I have noticed that he gets extremely tired.

We hope to find him a home with someone who understands his limitations, but also the fact that he is a young boy who does not let his rear-leg unsteadiness get in the way of running and walking. He is a GREAT gentle dog and sweet soul. Very affectionate. Loves to be hugged and kissed.
