CAMERON

adult (~ 4 years), Beagle/Miniature Pinscher (?) mix, spayed female

Cameron is a high energy young beagle who found her way to our rescue through a veterinarian's office in Northern New Jersey.  Cameron completed an evaluation at the University of Pennsylvania Behavior Clinic and does best when on some medication to decrease her anxieties. She is generally crate and housetrained, but will have an occasional accident due to her anxiety.  She loves to play with other dogs, and will play fetch with someone for as long as they are willing to play.  Cameron's ideal home is with a committed, child-free adopter - preferably with some beagle or dog training experience! Please ask about Cameron so we can find her the loving home she deserves!

GEOFFREY

adult (~4 years), neutered male

Hi!  My name is Geoffrey!  I've had an interesting road in my short walk of life...

I was bred for research, and arrived at my laboratory when I was 1 year old.  Baseline blood and urine tests showed that something was a little "off" with my kidneys.  The lab kept me for a whole year - never using me in any studies - and after my last round of blood and urine tests about a year later decided that I just could not be used in any studies, and needed to leave the laboratory.  They were kind enough to ask CBR-East if they could take me to help diagnose my condition and find me a forever home.  So here I am!

Update: Geoffrey had an ultrasound which indicated that there are no structural abnormalities to account for his kidney issues.  In some ways that is good, but in others, means that there is something wrong with the way Geoffrey's kidneys are functioning that we cannot really fix.

What Geoffrey has is called glomerulonephritis (GN). It is insufficiency of his kidney function, and causes him to lose protein (proteinuria) through his urine. There are dogs that can live many years with "GN" with just basic support, but adopters must understand that Geoffrey will need continued monitoring and treatment. He is currently taking ACE inhibitors (Enalapril), and takes EFA caps and Colostrum caps as his supplements.  He is on an all natural food, and has yogurt with his breakfast.  He is thriving with this combination and this should continue until a vet recommends a change. His kidney levels will need to be checked every 3 months.

Geoffrey is ADORABLE, and just loves to cuddle.  He is afraid of just about everything - including his own shadow and reflection in a mirror!  He is coming along nicely, though, and loves to play with other beagles.  If Geoffrey had been brought into a home when he was a puppy, you would have no idea that there is anything wrong with his kidneys.  He has no clinical symptoms.  It was really own caught because of the testing done in the laboratory which most veterinarians would not normally begin to do for a housepet until about 5-6 years of age! He is working on his housetraining and cratetraining, and would do best in a calm, quiet home with a fenced in yard, another friendly beagle to play with, and someone home a good part of the day. Geoffrey's fears would make him inappropriate in a home with children under the age of 15.  He is not aggressive by any means!  He is just afraid of a lot...

SAVANNAH

young (~ 2 years), spayed female

My name is Savannah! I was retired from a biomedical research experiment which left me with just 1 kidney!  Hey - I got to help some people with kidney transplant research, and now I get to find a forever home. :) How awesome is that?!

I am loving exploring this fascinating world outside the laboratory.  If I can tell you one thing, it is that I LOVE toys!  Balls are really cool, and I love to chew on nylabones. Once I get to know you, I am crazy!  I give kisses all the time, and I love to play with other dogs.  The problem is that when I first meet, I will run away.  I will need very patient adopters to understand this, and still be willing to adopt me and work with me.  I tend to "bolt" whenever I hear a sound, so a fenced in yard would be great for me so that if I bolt, I am still contained!

WALKER

adult  (~4 years), neutered male

Walker just arrived to CBR-East. :) He is an adorable little beagle who was used in biomedical research studies.  There are no anticipated short or long term effects expected from his "time of service."  Now, we just need to find him a loving home!

Update: Walker has had quite an adventure here at CBR-East.  After being with us for less than a week, Walker accidentally got out of his foster home and was lost in the woods and on the busy streets of Princeton, NJ for 8 long days.  With the help of our amazing volunteers, the Princeton community, the Animal Control Officer, and about $1,500 in supplies and reward money, Walker was trapped in a humane trap on the 8th day and came back to CBR-East.  He is settling in nicely in a new foster home, but has some weight to gain, and needs to work on his housetraining.  Walker is quite terrified now when he goes outside, and really wants nothing to do with the outdoors at this point in time.  We think Walker would do best as an only dog in a home since he is challenging the  more dominant dogs in his foster home.  We see the potential for Walker to have some separation anxiety, so someone who is home, or who can give him a lot of attention and training would be the best fit for him. We think an active home with young children will be too overwhelming for Walker.  He is a great little beagle who experienced an 8 day adventure long before he was ready to do so, and now needs to find some security and stability in a wonderful and loving adoptive home.

Update:  Walker is doing fabulously!  He is very much a "boy" - loves to wrestle with other dogs (although we still think he would do best as an only dog, but with playdates!), loves to chew on nylabones, is quite muscular and just looks like a handsome boy.  He enjoys being outside again, and has reacted well to new people he has met.  He is cratetrained and housetrained to a schedule.  He still loves his dogbed and would make a great companion for the right adopter!  He is initially cautious with new people and new environments, but with patience and time, will do great!

PEACHES

adult (~ 4-5 years), spayed female

Housetrained!!!

You read that right LOL – Peaches is one smart cookie coz she knows that lots of people are searching for a doggie who has a clue about keeping a clean crate!

Well, if that’s you – search no more!

Peaches came to us a few months ago from an out of state shelter were she was depressed, tired and scared.  But look at her now!  She’s healthy, happy and thriving in foster care.

Peaches is housetrained, crate trained and up to date on all of her vaccines – in short, she’s ready to find her furr-ever home.

Peaches would be happiest in a medium/low energy household with a family with older children who might like taking her to a ballpark to watch kids play on a lazy Sunday.  She likes to walk on leash and like every beagle we know, she likes “sniff time”.  Tail in the air, nose to the ground – that’s Peaches!

Peaches currently is in foster care with 2 fuzzy siblings who keep her busy but we don’t think another dog in her future home is necessary as she likes time with her humans, too.

Peaches travels well and does like spending time in the sunny spots on her deck.

If you are interested in a companion who doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, please ask us about her – she’s waiting patiently for someone to love her.

KAY

adult (6 years), spayed female

Kay is doing great in foster care!  She is a relatively mellow girl who loves to curl up on the couch.  She also enjoys playing with her canine foster siblings! Kay gets a bit nervous when she is outside of her comfort zone, so we are looking for patient adopters who will understand and work with her on this.  She is cratetrained and housetrained to a schedule, and seems to love almost everyone she meets.   She'll make a wonderful pet for the right adopter, preferably one with another beagle for her to play with, and a fenced in yard!

BELLE - ADOPTED
adult (6 years), spayed female

Belle has been retired from use as a "training dog" for biomedical research. Having spent her life in a laboratory, she can still be pretty overwhelmed by everything in the real world!  She is generally very quiet and docile. She does love curling up on the couch with you, though! She craves attention from people, and will need a very patient adopter to help her work through her insecurities.  She loves to be outside in the warm sun, so a fenced in yard is what we want for Belle. :)  This way she can do so and still feel protected inside the yard! Right now, we would need someone who is home a good portion of the day to continue to help Belle get comfortable with the world.  Although Belle is fine with children, we feel a household with young children and a lot of activity will NOT be a good one for her. She is cratetrained and continues to work on her housetraining!  Are you willing to help a dog who may need a little extra time and patience?

AVA
adult (6 years), spayed female

Ava is described by her foster homes as a "sweet little peanut!" :)

Ava has spent her entire life helping train staff who work in biomedical research - help them learn how to draw blood, for example!  Her time as a "training dog" is now over and she is getting ready for her retirement!  Woo-hoo!

Everyone who meets Ava loves her. She keeps her crate clean, and will do business in the backyard on a tie out as well as on leash.  She is working on her housetraining. :)  She loves to play with dog toys and happily greets dogs - no matter how large!!

Ava will go into her crate and lay down, and we think she finds comfort there. She'll also sleep by her foster mom's feet when she works on the computer.  We think Ava would do best in a home with another dog.  A home with young children would be too much for Ava, but older, calmer children might be OK.  Ava still startles easily, however, she gets over it as quickly as she startles. :)  Ultimately, Ava LOVES PEOPLE AND ATTENTION FROM PEOPLE. . .

JESSE - ADOPTED!
adult (4 years), neutered male

Tattooed girls need not apply – THIS Jesse is a family man.

Faithful, handsome, calm and very much a gentleman this little boy is ready for his furr-ever home and that’s no bull(ock). Jesse was a hard worker here on the east coast who recently retired from his job in research. Now he’s ready to live the life of a spoiled boy.

Unlike others with his name, this guy is true blue – he loves being with people and is very gentle.  He has a soft spot for tummy rubs and he is learning quickly what housetraining is. Jesse is not an outlaw but he IS a ladies man (at least the ladies he has met can’t take their eyes off of him coz he’s so adorable).  Up to date on vaccines, microchipped, snipped (sorry Jesse) and highly photogenic this little boy would be best in a fenced yard and we think he’d be fine with kids.  He does not really care much for other dogs though so he probably should go to a home where he is the center of attraction.

If you spend your nights at seedy bars waiting to ruin someone's award night, keep searching coz THIS Jesse is ready to go to a home where he’ll be your one and only.

DUKE
adult (5 years), neutered male
Meet Duke. Duke just turned 5 and he celebrated his birthday by settling in to his retirement and learning about life outside of a laboratory.

Duke is a sweet, affectionate boy who just wants to be loved. He’s adapting well to life in a home (and having a lap to curl up in).

He keeps his crate clean and dry both during the day while his foster family is at work and at night.

Duke LOVES sitting out in the yard "people-watching" through the fence. If anybody approaches he gets very animated and will stand up on the fence "asking" to be pet or any attention.

The neighbor had a children’s party one day and Duke had the best time running up and down the fence keeping up with the kids. At one point their ball came over the fence and Duke chased it and batted it around quite happily until it was retrieved and returned to the kids.

Duke is still learning what is and isn’t "OK" to chew, so keeping an eye on him, especially when he gets too quiet is a good idea. Substituting an "approved" object for the incorrect one has been effective.

A full flight of stairs is still a challenge for him, but he handles the 4 steps from the back porch to the yard with no problem.

So far Duke has met no strangers, simple new friends – men, women, children, cats, other dogs…

Housetraining is coming along well as long as he gets outside as soon as he’s loose from his crate we’ve had no accidents, but he would rather be with a person than go outside so it is still necessary to walk him to the door.

RALPH
adult (5 years), neutered male

Hi there, I’m Ralph! (my foster-family calls me Ralphie) I spent most of my life in a laboratory. I’ve only been out in the “real world” for about a month, and boy is there a LOT to learn, but it’s SO much fun!

I’m a 5 ½ year-old beagle boy. I’m one of the smaller beagles here at my foster home, I weigh about 20 lb. I probably need to put on 1-2 lbs ‘cause when I first came out of the laboratory my tummy was really, really upset and and I lost weight, but it’s all better now and I’m doing well on a diet of Natural Balance. There are a BUNCH of other dogs here at my foster home and they do things I’m not sure about yet, it’s called playing. It looks like fun, but I’m not really sure how to do it, so I sometimes just run alongside and bark. Oh, yea, I can bark, too. I like running up and down the fence-line at my foster home and try to get the people in the next yard to run with me, but usually only the little humans will do that. I get very excited when they do and I bark then, too. I think I like the little humans. I’ve met a few and my tail just goes and goes when they’re around!

The first time I saw the big dog in my foster home I didn’t want to go in the yard, but I’ve learned that he’s just big, not mean or scary. I’m still cautious of NEW big dogs, but they don’t make me that scared any more. I like cats, too. There are two in my foster-home and a “store cat” at the local pet-supply store and I like touching noses, but if they hiss at me I don’t think that they’re fun to play with anymore and go find something else to do. I don’t bark a lot or all the time, but I do bark enough that I probably would not be a great dog for an apartment or condo. I do pretty well on the leash, but a harness is strongly recommended ‘cause there are still things that startle me and I might pull loose from a collar. When I eat (I eat in my crate) I lie down next to the bowl and eat while I’m laying down. My foster-human thinks it’s kind of funny, but I don’t know why.

I like to join the humans on the couch – sometimes for a snuggle, sometimes I want my own “spot”, but I think furniture is SOOOO cool! Dog beds are nice too. I hear that some of my fellow laboratory retirees prefer the floor – , boy they don’t know what they’re missing! I LOOOOOVE to roll around on the couch and dog beds, it’s FUN (and it feels good, too)! I’m still working on mastering a full flight of stairs. I have no problem with the 4 steps up to the porch but that straight flight all the way to the 2nd floor is kinda scary and the first time I tried it one of my foster-brothers knocked me back down when I was about ½ of the way up. I haven’t tried THAT again.

I’m doing really well on the “housetraining” thing, but still have accidents once in a while. A big part of my “success” is that I’ve trained my foster-human that I need to go out RIGHT AWAY when I first get up, when somebody first gets home, right before I get crated if my foster-human is going out, and of course right before bedtime. (If I’m already sleeping when it is time for “last out” I try to be real small and not get noticed so I don’t have to get up, but they always find me, anyway).

LUKE
adult (4 years), neutered male

Luke has arrived at CBR-East!

We do have one word the describes Luke - happy. :)  Luke is incredibly friendly, and seems to love everyone he meets - dogs, men, women, children...  (We do not know about cats, but think Luke would just want to play with them.) He is cratetrained and is working on his housetraining.  He has a few extra pounds to lose, but is doing a great job!  He likes to run and play, and his tail is always wagging.  He is soft like a teddy bear and he'll follow you around just to be near you.  He is quite sweet and incredibly adoptable. :) OK, so maybe there is more than one word to describe the adorable Luke! Please consider giving this little dog, who has spent his entire life being used in nontoxic dosing studies for biomedical research, a chance to "retire" as a loved housepet! You won't be disappointed!

RASCAL
adult (4 years), neutered male

Are you looking for a new family friend?  Do you love seeing a beagle wag his tail?  Does it make you smile to have a happy dog follow you around?  Do you want a friend who loves hugs and belly rubs but is not super clingy?  How about a beagle that has a playful side, but also enjoys a good nap?  Then look no further because I am the beagle for you!  I am Rascal a 4.5 year old retired beagle.  I am so happy to be in the real world and I am adjusting really well.

I am very sweet and happy.  I might have a little bit of a rascally personality but I am not wild, just a fun loving guy.  I am a good listener, I love belly rubs, hugs, sleeping in my dog bed, playing with toys, and being near other dogs.  I still have some work on my house training but I am pretty predictable, so if you keep me on a regular schedule it will work out well for all of us.  I am able to keep my crate clean and dry all day long!  I am the dog on the right in this picture - hanging out with my foster brother, Cole.

I do have a special need. My eyes are dry and I need one drop in each eye twice a day.  I am very good for my drops so it is easy to do.  It's not a big deal, but I have to get my medication from a veterinarian, and I must have them for the rest of my life. I know I am not perfect yet but I’m smart.  I promise to love you forever and always if you just give me a chance. (To learn more about Rascal's eye condition please click here.  He has been seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist and has no visual impairments or corneal scarring - just needs the drops!)

JOHNNY
(AKA JOHNNY B. GOODE
adult (5 years), neutered male

HE’S MOVE IN READY!  Johnny is a happy, sweet, laid back guy who settled into his foster home in a matter of hours.  He has wonderful house manners – is housetrained to a schedule, not a big chewer and doesn’t have much to say (translation, not a barker).  He loves his daily walks and walks nicely on a lead. He gets along fine with other friendly dogs and though not cat tested yet, we think he will be OK with felines.  He enjoys cuddling on the sofa and being with his family.  He has mastered the skill of snoozing on his dog bed during the day and is just a gentle soul.  Johnny is looking for a family that will cherish him and appreciate the fact that he gave the first 5 years of his life to medical research and is now happy to be retired and looking for a home of us own.  His ideal home would be a calm home with older kids or a retired couple looking for an easy companion to enjoy each other’s company.  He won’t be around for long because Move in Ready is hard to find!

BACKSTER
adult (5 years), neutered male

Backster may just be the happiest beagle on earth.  His tail wags non-stop, it is rumored that it may even wag while he is sleeping. He is always there to greet you with a smile, hug, kiss and wag.  It does not get much better than that.  You can not be sad around Backster.  Maybe he is so happy because he is celebrating his retirement from research.  He did his part for humanity, now it is his turn to be pampered and waited on hand and paw.  He deserves it!

Backster is FABULOUS in his crate and is house trained to a schedule.  He gets along famously with his Beagle foster sister and Mini Dachshund foster brother.  He has not been around cats but considering he does not have a mean bone in his body, he would probably be fine with proper introduction.

Backster LOVES everyone he meets and the feeling is mutual.  He is a fan favorite for sure!

His dream family would be one with lots of members to dote on him all day.  He wants to share the love ;)

If you want to be perpetually happy and experience an unconditional love like no other, consider adopting this gem of a Beagle. We may be starting Backster on medication for some mild seizures, but don't let that hold you back!  He is an incredible beagle who will fill your home with smiles and laughter!

ALFIE
adult (4 years), neutered male mix

Alfie has arrived at CBR-East! OK - so he's not exactly a purebred beagle, BUT, he is absolutely one of our laboratory retirees!  Alfie has spent his entire life in a research facility and never ended up being used for any studies!  We thought that still qualified him for our Laboratory Division, and we made an exception to help this special dog get a second chance at life. :)

We are excited to have Alfie.  He will need some time to figure out the real world, but so far, he is enjoying the company of his canine foster siblings.   He is being cratetrained and is working on his housetraining. A quieter home would be the best kind of home for Alfie right now.  We will post more about him as we learn about him!

TEDDY - ADOPTED!
young (2 years), neutered male

Know why I am named "Teddy?" It's short for Teddy Bear. :)  I am a tiny beagle - about 18 lbs - and I love to snuggle!  I am learning about life, and I enjoy being around other dogs.  I keep my crate clean all day, and am still working on my housetraining.  I pretty much love everyone I meet, as long as they will hold me and snuggle with me!  I have just found my voice, and it is not a beagle howl - it is a bark! I have only been using it when I want something from one of my foster brothers or sisters.  I like to play with tennis balls and chew toys and would love a home with a fenced in yard, but that's not a requirement.  I'm a typical young beagle who will need a loving and patient adopter.  I hope it will be you!

BODE
young (1.5 years), neutered male

Bode has arrived in his foster home.  What a sweetie! He has been a relatively quiet beagle who loves blankets!!  He keeps his crate clean and dry, and loves to play with toys.  He is getting along with the other dogs in his foster home, but would likely do well as an only dog as well.  We are still assessing Bode to see what type of home will be best for him, so please check back in a week or two for more details! DEZ - ADOPTED
young (1 year), spayed female

KNOCK OUT, VERY PETITE REDHEAD seeks weak-willed and easily manipulated human to satisfy my every whim. My interests include working on my summer tan (I love lounging in the sun), running in circles, quiet evenings at home, great food and tummy rubs. I'm in great shape, wonderfully groomed, H/W negative, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and adorable as all get-out, I'd love to go to a home where I can be pampered like a princess. I"m super sweet, very dog friendly, love sitting in your lap and I also play a mean game of tug-o-war. I know that the right family is out there waiting for me to complete their home. Could it be yours?

CHARMS
young (1 year), spayed female

Meet Charms - she's one lucky girl.
First, she gets to retire from her job at just 1 1/2 years old and now she's gonna make the cover of Dog Fancy...

Well, ok that's obviously not true but ya gotta agree she COULD be a cover girl.
She's tiny, she's adorable and she's got beauty to spare. Charms is new to our rescue but she's having a blast in foster care. She currently spends her time chasing her foster brothers and sisters, rollin in the grass and livin the good life every doggie deserves. Charms would be great with kids and she plays very nicely with the pooches in her foster home.  We dunno anything about her and cats but we have a suspicion they wouldn't bother her in the least.  She is working on her cratetraining and housetraining, so you'll just have to help her out a bit with that!

Oh and did we mention she's Broadway Bound? Yep!! We're takin Charms to this year's Broadway Barks - where else would a model go?

CAGNEY
senior (9 year), spayed female

So how many homes does a beagle really need? You'd think just 1, right?  Well, Cagney and Lacey have had 2 so far, and now at 7 and 9 years old, they are looking for a 3rd - preferably together, if possible!

Cagney and Lacey were surrendered to a vet's office and then a shelter back in 2006.  Their family could no longer afford to keep them.  CBR-East brought them into the rescue and found them a loving family.  Funny how history repeats itself since after 4 years in a loving home, financial reasons are once again plaguing these sweet girls and their owners have returned them to CBR as they once again need to find a new home.  It is not that Cagney and Lacey have had any medical or behavioral problems - their owners were struggling to provide even the basics of routine vet care for them. We think enough is enough for these great beagles who are now in boarding at Camp Bow Wow in Lacey, NJ. This dynamic duo just needs a home to love them and offer some stability and permanence.

Cagney is the older beagle of this awesome pair! :)  She is pretty mellow, and is just a great beagle.  She is housetrained and loves the company of other beagles. She's been living in homes with older children. We would like to keep Cagney & Lacey together since they have never been apart, but we will consider splitting them if absolutely necessary.  Please, we are looking for a true forever home for these great girls.  They deserve it already!  Please apply for this great pair! Cagney would love a nice lap to nap on!

Thank you to Michael Bagley Photography for taking the great pics of the girls!

Lacey is the younger beagle of this awesome pair! :)  She is more active and mischievous, but can also be a little more fearful of things like storms.  She'll follow you everywhere you go would love it if you tossed her a bone to chew on every now and then (or every day!). She may need a refresher with housetraining, but in she has the general idea! HAPPY- COURTESY POSTING

adult (~6 years), male

PLEASE NOTE THAT HAPPY IS NOT WITH CBR-EAST, BUT IS WITH HIS OWNER IN EDGEWATER, NJ.  HE IS SIMPLY BEING LISTED AS A COURTESY.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HAPPY, PLEASE CALL IVETTE at: 201-543-4226.

We have a 6 year old male beagle, Happy, that we cannot keep. We have been looking for a home for him privately for quite some time and have not had any luck. He is up to date on all his shots and is a friendly, fun loving dog. He is great with kids and simply needs an owner that can give him the attention he deserves. Our circumstances have changed significantly and we are unable to continue caring for him. Please help! He is not fixed and suffers from seasonal allergies which we
treat. I am attaching a recent photo and hope that you will be able to help us place him in a loving home. We are located in Edgewater, NJ. You can reach me by phone at 201-543-4223. Thanks very much in advance.

If interested in learning more about Happy, email his owner here.

OLIVER- COURTESY POSTING

young (~3-4 years), neutered male

PLEASE NOTE THAT OLIVER IS NOT WITH CBR-EAST, BUT IS WITH ANOTHER RESCUE IN CENTRAL NEW JERSEY. HE IS SIMPLY BEING LISTED AS A COURTESY.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OLIVER, PLEASE CONTACT JACKIE at BAMA'S NATURAL INSTINCT BY CLICKING HERE.

ONLY NJ APPLICANTS WILL BE CONSIDERED, AND NONE WITH AN INVISIBLE FENCE.

Oliver is about 3-4 years old, neutered, up to date on all shots, good with other animals. He has some hind leg weakness. The vet thinks this is from a previous back/disc injury. His hind leg weakness does not keep him from walking around, or going to the bathroom. He is a little wobbly on the hind end -- no iron beagle competitions for him ;0) -- but he gets around just fine. He can chase a ball, but does get tired after a bit and then sits down. Overall he is a very happy boy.

A report from his foster home includes: "He is pretty active -- for a boy with sort of wobbly hind legs -- and has been getting around the house just fine. He walks well on a leash and loves the park. He gets along fine with other dogs and loves kids and sunning himself in the yard (so a fenced-in-yard is a must.)

With that said, I think a home where he has to go up multiple levels throughout the day is not going to work. While he can do stairs, he is somewhat unsteady going up and down them and I could see him taking a spill if left unsupervised. (We kind of "spot" him on the stairs and, when going out, make sure baby gates are up on all stairways.) Also, after doing the stairs a few times-a-day to go in and out to the bathroom, I have noticed that he gets extremely tired.

We hope to find him a home with someone who understands his limitations, but also the fact that he is a young boy who does not let his rear-leg unsteadiness get in the way of running and walking. He is a GREAT gentle dog and sweet soul. Very affectionate. Loves to be hugged and kissed.
