He arrived a very sick boy, in severe pain….but his body is all healed and mended. We think his soul is too. After being with us for almost a year he told us he wants to stay…with CBR’s Denise Sproul….forever. So he shall! Welcome home, River!
This sweet boy was found wandering on a bike path in Lisbon, OH. His condition was grim. He was holding his head at a tilt, had a foul odor and a very large, hanging, fleshy massy hanging from his side. His eyes said “please help me”. He was set to be euthanized the following day at a shelter. You see, nobody wants a dog like River (who they simply called Old Man). Nobody but someone very special who we will find soon! We got word of this guy and knew he was worthy so we set a plan in motion to save him. Our volunteers in West Virginia volunteered to go get him…a long day’s drive for them. But CBR has the BEST volunteers so we weren’t surprised. The next day, a vet visit was in order. Our vet had never seen teeth in this poor of condition. He had some missing teeth where they were so rotten they just fell out. In those sockets was packed hay, grass, hair and other debris. There were holes in his mouth that had eroded and went clear up into his nasal sinus, which explained by he was oozing blood and mucous from his nose when we got him. He had surgery on 9/23/11 to clean his teeth, removed all of the rotten debris and extract some rotten teeth. Also, the holes up to his sinuses had to be cleaned and sutured closed and the large mass removed, which was benign. He also got neutered while in surgery. Unfortunately, it took 4 more surgeries to repair his mouth with some 60+ stitches. A couple of months of recovery and he’s as good as new now!
River has really found his personality. He will be walking around and then suddenly kick up his heels and start zooming around the house, yard, or wherever he happens to be. He has a very mellow personality and despite losing 14 teeth, he has no trouble eating. Anything. He will follow you everywhere so if you’re looking for a companion, this is your guy! He sleeps in a wire crate at night but needs to be where he can see you.
River has been in the media for his story and most recently in The Oregonian!
