A Tribute to Tucker
For those that never knew Tucker - you don't know how priviledged I was to be his mommy.
I got him from a beagle rescue and he was on their "black list" - he'd been adopted
out and returned 5 times in less than 6 months. I was looking for a playmate for my dog
Poky when I learned about him. His foster mom lived in Brewster NY and
I was slated to meet Tuck on a Saturday. I
adopted Tucker without any paperwork because he had been a problem dog. Even in rescue
he wasn't safe so when I say I was his last chance, I mean it whole heartedly.
I drove to her house and at first sight thought he was the skinniest and oddest looking
dog I'd seen - he had huge huge ears, weighed all of 19 lbs and had these long eyebrow
antenna that looked like giant whiskers. He must have known how I was feeling and he
ran over to the fence, hopping up and down for me to pick him up and there was the
problem - once i held him I had to take him home. On the way back he pooped in my car -
and if you knew Tucker at all you'd have expected that from him -
Thru the years he pulled some stunts that I still shake my head at - he had the talent
of unwrapping a tootsie pop, sitting with it - stick between his paws and he'd eat that
stupid "golly" pop without biting it almost down to the stick. He'd get his whiskers and
chin full of sticky sugary goo - but he LOVED them and stole them whenever he could.
Tucker also was quite a burglar. We had a game that HE initiated. I'd go to bed, he'd
follow me. Give or take in 5 mins, if he didn't get a biscuit he'd hop off the bed and
go out into the dining room, open the bottom of my curio cabinet, steal a tea cup, bring
it back to bed and would NOT give it back until I got a treat for him. He'd growl if I
tried to get it before he got a reward.
He was my very best friend thru all the awful things and some
of the wonderful things that have happened to me and I'll never be the same for having
had him - nor will I ever be the same for having loved and lost him.
Just because Tucker was Tucker thru and thru - an added note...on the way to the
vet yesterday, as in the beginning, he pooped on the back seat of my car.
Godspeed to you Tucker - you were NOT an unwanted throw away. You were the best dog any
one person could have ever asked for and you may have been someone elses "junk" but you
will always forever remain my treasure.
I will always love you,
Your mommie
