About PRECIOUS

Precious...her name fits this adorable, sweet girl!  She came to us through our B.A.R.C. program.  She's from Missouri where she came into the shelter because her elderly owner had to go live in a nursing home.   Despite her long flight, she arrived with tail wagging and clean crate.  The moment we slipped a leash on her she was ready for a nice walk.  She looks like a little ballerina when she walks...she sort of glides along.  She would LOVE a home where she could be the only Queen of the household!  She would love to be your girl but no small children.   She is in good general health and ready to start her brand new life in Oregon! Precious is one of those girls you just gotta meet.  She is spayed, microchipped, and current on all vaccinations.   This sweetie could be yours!  Adoption Fee: $100.

Sugar's foot tumor has been removed!

About Sugar

Sugar came to us from a shelter in Baltimore, MD where she was on death row.  She was found in a metal dump box by police, who summoned Animal Control Officers to remove her.  She was filthy, terrified and had a gigantic growth on the bottom of her right hind foot.  Her ears are extremely infected and her teeth are a mess...what's left of them.  Despite all of this, she is a sweet, grateful girl who just wants to be loved.  Who could discard such a beautiful soul?  We contacted the shelter and told them we wanted to help so they put our name on her kennel.  We had until morning to pull her or she would be euthanized.  Our wonderful CBR Adopters, who now live in DC, jumped into action and got to the shelter 2 hours prior to her euthanization time.  Bless them.  We brought her to Portland, Oregon via Alaska Airlines on 3/23/09.  Upon her arrival at the airport, she will be whisked to CBR vets for evaluation and plan.  Surgery was donated by our skilled, compassionate vet, Dr. Jennifer Anderson of Wilsonville Vet Clinic.  The balance of her medical care was covered by our wonderful supporters through donations.

8/9/09 UPDATE:

True to her name, she is as sweet as honey, playful, and loves being a normal beagle!  The sugery is complete, she is fully recovered, and now she just hopes for a forever home.  She is ready to be adopted!  See new pictures of her without that huge tumor, below.

3/23/09 UPDATE:

We arrived at PDX airport and received our precious gift...little Sugar.  She was in good spirits but really wanted out of that crate to potty!   When we opened her crate door and lifted her to the ground we were just moved to tears to see her try to walk with the alien growth on her back foot.  Much to our dismay, we watched her flop that foot as she hobbled along.  It was raining and she was on asphalt.  Soon the growth started to bleed so we swooped her up, put her back in the crate and drove off to find softer terrain for her to do her business.  We got to the vet and walked her again on softer ground.  It was heartbreaking to watch.  The tumor is larger than it looks in pictures.  We are very concerned.  Dr. Anderson gently drew blood for a complete panel and aspirated cells from several tumors to send off to pathology.  She also discovered some mammory tumors.  Randi will be kept at the vet overnight and scheduled for surgery in the morning.  Keeping paws crossed for a wonderful outcome.

3/24/09 UPDATE:
Dr. Anderson called and reported that Sugar's bloodwork "looks good"...yay!  She said that surgery will begin shortly after 11:00 AM.  The plan is to (A) remove the huge tumor from her foot; (B) remove mammory tumors; (C) spay.  Depending on how long she has been under anesthesia at this point, she will continue with: Removing tumors from her head and back leg, work on her teeth....she has infected molars that need to be pulled.  Oh, she will also microchip her and deep clean those filthy, infected ears.  All masses and growths will be sent off to pathology.  Our thought is...it doesn't really matter whether or not she has cancer...we will make every day of the rest of her life the best days possible for her...even if it means hamburgers and ice cream!  But, we're still hopeful that these are all benign.

3/25/09 UPDATE:
Sugar was released from the hospital today!  She walked out of the vet office, although her now tumor-less foot is bandaged and bukly.  I'm sure she will be very surprised when she realizes that the tumor is GONE!  Dr. Anderson did have to amputate her middle toe.  It was attached to the tumor and she was unable to remove the tumor and save the toe pad.  She is pretty painful, but that is to be expected.  Forster Mom, Cyd, is taking wonderful care of her and making sure she gets her pain meds.  Randi had a thick, soft bed and pink fleece blanket waiting for her....and even a new pink fleece toy.  She is lavishing in the bed and resting peacefully.  Tomorrow is a new day as she starts her new life!  NEW PICTURES ADDED TODAY!

3/26/09 UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM:

I bought some hamburger and guess what -- she loves it -- just gobbled it down.  For dinner, I'm going to mix some of her dog food with the hamburger and slowly make it more dog food than hamburger.

She's doing really well -- she still throws her foot in the air like she walking with the turmor.  It's probably become second nature to her or maybe it hurts when she walks on it.  She sleeps most of the time.  She has just charmed my boys though.  They bring stuff to her, but she doesn't seem to know what to do with the toys they bring her.  She was sleeping on a pillow and Smarty must have brought her a half dozen toys -- he looks at me like "Mom, how come she doesn't play?"   When I turned around again, Smarty had snuggled up to her on the pillow.

UPDATE:  Sugar is fully recovered and ready for adoption!  She is a wonderful dog who has learned to run again and romp.  She is very, very sweet and wants a home where she can retire to the sofa and hang out with YOU!
