2013 Board of Directors
Cascade Beagle Rescue’s Board of Directors is a working board. All of our board members play a key role in making our organization function. All of our board members have fostered, adopted, and worked at events over the years. We are pleased to present our current members.
Amy Freeman – President
Amy began volunteering for CBR in 2005 as a foster when a huge puppymill case landed on its doorstep. She has been part of the event team of putting on our annual fundraiser, Beaglepalooza, and any other community events that need help. Amy’s love for beagles started with Snoopy, but she didn’t realize how like Snoopy her first beagle Boomer would be – TROUBLE. With the help of CBR she adopted her second beagle Belle, a senior girl from Virginia and nursed her back to health. She graduated from Oregon State with a BS in Merchandising Management. Out of school, she began her Nike career at Niketown Portland and worked in the retail division for over 3 years. Amy then returned to Oregon State and was the Director of Marketing for the OSU Athletic Department for 4 seasons (Go Beavs!). She returned to Nike in 2002 and is currently the Licensed Retail Brand Manager working with the NFL, MLB and college teams on their retail programs. She has also recruited her family into the CBR circle as volunteers, fosters, and beagle owners.
Joni Bott – Secretary
In 2001, inspired by her best friend Zeb, Joni started searching for volunteer opportunities with charity and rescue organizations focused on helping beagles. As fate would have it while walking Zeb one day they met Denise with her beagles and learned of her rescue work. It wasn’t until 2002 when moving to a home with a secure beagle yard that Joni could actively foster rescue dogs. By that time Denise had formed Cascade Beagle Rescue. Joni and her husband Keith have been a part of this organization ever since and are proud to now be on the board of directors. To the Bott family there is nothing more important than helping as many beagles as possible and being a part of this wonderful rescue and family of CBR volunteers.
Lowell Sochia – Treasurer
Lowell is a native Oregonian who joined the CBR team in 2007 as our web developer. In 2010, Lowell took on the daunting task of organizing ”Beagle Palooza”, our annual fundraiser event. Additionally he has fostered beagles in need. In fact, Porsche, Joey and Bhel, 3 CBR Alum beagles, found their forever homes with Lowell & Nik. The undying dedication to our organization was instrumental in the election of Lowell to the Board of Directors in 2010 and he is now serving his second term.
Denise Sproul – Executive Director/Founder
Although Denise grew up in California (Santa Monica and later, St. Helena), she is an Oregon native. She has always loved animals and had many pets in her life ranging from reptiles to birds but dogs always held top billing. Denise’s work in rescue began with Giani, a very abused beagle, who she adopted when she was 7 months old. Please take a moment to read her story here: Giani’s Story. It is because of this dog that Cascade Beagle Rescue exists. In starting her work in rescue she quickly realized there was no standardization; no organizations in place to specifically help rescue organizations grow, develop and succeed, so she founded the Animal Rescue Association of America.
Cyd, an avid beagle lover, got involved in beagle rescue by accident. When her daughter, Rochelle, lost her beloved beagle Rocky, they began a quest to find a new buddy. This search landed CBR two wonderful adopters, volunteers, and ultimately a new board member! Cyd and Rochelle have adopted two special needs beagles, Gunner and Miley. Read their stories – Miley and Gunnar. When a job opportunity opened up in Washington DC, Rochelle, Andy, and CBR Alums Gunnar and Miley headed east. Rochelle became our Eastern Region Adoption Coordinator. Cyd became a foster mom to another beagle, until we had a great need for an Adoption Coordinator in Portland. She hit the ground running..just like a beagle! This year she joins our board of directors and we couldn’t be more proud to have her on the team. Three beagles run Cyd’s household: Smarty, from Texas; Barney, a Katrina refugee; & Sugar, a CBR Alum from Baltimore.
Keith has been a valuable asset to CBR on many levels. His dedication and compassion for beagles is obvious when you see him hard at work “making things happen.” Prior to getting involved with rescue in 2002, Keith was a firefighter and paramedic, so he operates with a cool head – a skill often needed with beagles! He and Joni have been a loving foster home to over 20 beagles but two of them stole their hearts. Samantha and Xavier are now permanent residents at the Bott house. When Keith isn’t driving for FEDEX, he hits the waves on the Oregon coast to enjoy his new love..surfing. Fishing and starting his very own microbrewery in his garage, called “Bent Tail Brewing” are two other passions of his. CBR is lucky to have Keith on its team. He is a proven leader who works tirelessly toward our mission.
