The Heartworm Situation

In the past few months, we have had 3 beagles test positive for heartworm and we have treated 2 of them (Judson & Sammi pictured) ; the 3rd will begin shortly.  This treatment is extremely expensive - upward of $700/dog.  Heartworm has not been prevalent in our area but with these recent cases, we have added heartworm testing to our standard vet orders for every dog.  Judson was the first guy to be treated.  He struggled with the treatment, but made it through and is now heartworm free!  In his name we are starting the "Judson Fund" to raise money for heartworm testing ($30/dog) and treatment for those beagles in our program who test positive.  Heartworm cases are showing up in Oregon...especially southern Oregon and the Eugene/Springfield area.  Please test and protect your pets!

How heartworm impacts CBR financially
Testing for heartworm is costly; an additional $30 for each beagle we bring into our program.  Sometimes shelters test for heartworm and share the results with us, but we have found that sometimes the results are not accurate.  Our vets perform a more extensive test to be sure.  If we bring in 50-100 beagles per year, the cost of the testing ranges from $1,500 - $3,000. If a percentage of those beagles test positive the cost of treatment varies, depending on the degree of infection, but potentially it could cost thousands of dollars to help these victims.  Without treatment, they would die.  We need your help to increase our funds to cover this additional cost.
